Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment
Imagine a school that, in one year alone, takes home five state championships in Robotics, Science, Drama/Speech, Poetry and Destination Imagination. This school produces twice the national average of National Merit Scholar finalists, with 16 Scholars and 34 Finalists throughout its thirty-year history. This school consistently scores in the top one percent on national standardized tests. And, in addition to all these achievements, the students enjoy uniquely low levels of stress.

This is Maharishi School Iowa. Tucked away in the fields of Southeast Iowa in the United States, Maharishi School achieves its extraordinary levels of success and student well-being by utilizing education's secret trump cards: Consciousness-BasedSM education and the Transcendental Meditation technique.

How many schools actually provide a uniquely effective educational tool that helps students learn? The education at Maharishi School is not about overloading students with information, it's about providing a tool to help students absorb, assimilate and understand the knowledge of each discipline. By offering the Transcendental MeditationĀ® (TMĀ®) program as part of the curriculum, Maharishi School focuses not just on outer accomplishments but on developing the total potential within each student.

"Every part of our curriculum develops the awareness of the student, waking up his or her total brain functioning," explains Dr. Richard Beall, Head of School. "Every influence during the school day -from daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation program and yoga to eating organic lunches to the design of the building - is specifically designed to develop the student's full potential."

While Maharishi School boasts an impressive, broad-spectrum list of achievements, the school takes even greater pride in knowing that its students have made these accomplishments without the high level of stress usually associated with such levels of performance.

"Kids everywhere know stress," says Dr. Beall, "whether they are high achievers or at-risk students. To see a school that offers a college-preparatory curriculum and yet the kids become less stressed as they learn- that is not a common formula in education."

Here's what some Maharishi School Upper School students have to say:

Pearl Sawhney: "When I meditate I feel calm and peaceful, and I can feel my body receiving deep rest, even though I am not sleeping. When I'm done meditating, I feel really happy and my mind feels fresh and alert. The TM technique allows me to put more than 100% in everything that I do, and as a result I am able to accomplish a lot."

Sky Nite: "I started meditating in 10th grade and the first thing I noticed was that my health was better. I wasn't getting sick as much. I made friends easier, I was more focused in class, and I had more energy for all my activities -- school, sports and dance."

Pandy Wadsworth: "The TM technique allows me to focus on myself and is a way for me to relax and maintain inner happiness. I look forward to meditation and the feeling of tranquility to balance my otherwise busy school day."
