New German voluntary service accredits Maharishi World Peace Trust

22 December 2011 - The German government has accredited both the Maharishi World Peace Trust and the Peace Palace in Hannover to receive volunteers through a new federal volunteer service. An organizer for the Maharishi World Peace Trust said, 'This is another breakthrough in collective consciousness in Germany, that the German government is supporting our programme to create peace.'
Recently, Germany has shifted its defense and military policies to reduce funding and focus on creating peace instead of waging war. One result of this policy change has been the dissolution of the army conscription.*
Young men in Germany are no longer required to spend six months in the army. This change in policy also means that the alternative to conscription, six months of volunteer service, is no longer required.
As a result, the German government has started a new programme, a federal volunteer service, to replace the former volunteer service. This programme has been specially designed to support charitable organizations and institutions in Germany.
Affiliates of the service have to be carefully screened before they are accepted.
For this reason, teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme in Germany were happy to learn recently that the Maharishi World Peace Trust in Germany and the Peace Palace in Hannover have been accredited by the German government as centres of this civilian volunteer service.
The positions in this volunteer service are subsidized by the government, which will pay every volunteer EUR200 per month to be in the service.
The service is also open to foreigners. Those who participate from abroad will receive a visa from the government for up to two years.
Through the accreditation from the government, both the Maharishi World Peace Trust and the Maharishi Peace Palace in Hannover could potentially host local and international volunteers to help bring about 'peace through peaceful means'—including peace-creating experts from India who would be contributing to these organizations' valuable programmes.
