On 11 February 2008, His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was accorded a State funeral with full honours by the Government of India. The Agni Samadhi Vedic rites were conducted on a high plateau, on the grounds of a temple Maharishi had been in the process of building in homage to his Master, and overlooked the confluence of the Ganges in Allahabad. The State funeral, attended by thousands, was carried by Sadhana TV station, and was presided over by the Shankaracharya of the North, Swami Vishnudevananda Maharaj. During the military salute, the army held their rifles in a neutral position, in honour of Maharishi's life-long dedication to create world peace. The Sadhana TV commentator mentioned this was the first time a spiritual leader in India had been honoured in this way.
On Tuesday, 26 February the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly observed two minutes of silence as tribute Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As an additional mark of respect, the assembly adjourned for the day.
At the beginning of the assembly, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi, recognized Maharishi's valuable contribution to the world by popularising Transcendental Meditation and 'earning name and fame for Madhya Pradesh', the Central Chronicle reported.
Madhya Pradesh is the central state of India, in which the Brahmasthan of India, the geographical Center of India is located with the Global Capital of Raam Raj which had been established by Maharishi on the 12th of January 2008 after 50 years of global service to Guru Dev Brahmananda Saraswati as the fulfilment of the Spiritual Regeneration Movement, founded by Maharishi on the 1st of January 1958.
