LETHBRIDGE, Alta. -- A global meditation group says it can curb terrorism by training 600 Canadians at "invincibility schools" in the art of yogic flying.
The Global Country of World Peace, which is part of the transcendental meditation movement, wants to establish the schools in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa and eventually hopes to expand into every province.
Neil Paterson, who represents the organization in Canada, said the schools would teach basic and advanced techniques of transcendental meditation and the Veda, the body of knowledge from the most ancient Hindu scriptures that contains the total understanding of natural law.
"From this practice they will neutralize any criminal, destructive or negative tendencies," Paterson told the Lethbridge Herald in a telephone interview from Holland.
Yogic flying, where participants become airborne by bouncing in the lotus position, is an advanced form of the meditation.
The invincibility force of flyers wouldn't require weapons, fancy uniforms, tanks or armoured trucks.
Instead, Paterson said the positive messages generated by yogic flyers would permeate to those who have criminal tendencies.
Yogic flying was espoused by the Natural Law Party, which ran candidates in federal elections in the 1990s.
Paterson was the party's leader in the 1993 election. The party did not win any seats.
