M.U.M. to offer degree in integrative medicine
Modern medicine will merge with old-world knowledge as part of Maharishi University of Management's plan to establish a College of Perfect Health.
The university is on its way to becoming the first in the nation to offer a medical degree in integrative medicine.
"Doctors will learn everything that doctors do everywhere else - plus," said Dr. Robert Schneider, dean of the new college. In addition to training in conventional medicine, Schneider explained students in the new program will be trained in natural medicine with the goal of integrating the "two paradigms in order to create the most effective and side effect-free form of medicine."
According to Schneider, modern medicine has its holes: more than 250,000 Americans die each year from side-effects of modern medicine, and half the population suffers from chronic disorders. He also noted the high cost of modern medicine.
"Give modern medicine its due, but modern medicine needs help," he said.
Some medical practitioners have already turned to Maharishi Ayurveda. Affiliates of the university have more than 30 years of experience with Ayurveda, which has proven effective in more than 600 published studies, Schneider said.
"It's the oldest system of medicine in the world," he said. "It's the most time-tested system of medicine, as well as being low or free of side effects."
And if modern medicine and Ayurveda aren't enough, the university's program will incorporate elements of Chinese medicine, homeopathic medicine and manipulative medicine.
"All of these have contributions to make, and no one has put them all together, so that's our unique mission," Schneider said.
He is leading a core group of faculty, staff and consultants in applying for accreditation for the program through the Liaison Committee of Medical Education, which is the nationally recognized accrediting authority for American and Canadian schools offering a M.D. degree. He hopes to open the five-year dual-degree program in the next couple years, and in preparation, the university will begin offering an undergraduate major in pre-medicine in the spring of 2009.
Schneider also is in the process of establishing partnerships with area hospitals. He will meet with Jefferson County Hospital officials Tuesday to explore the potential for collaboration.
