On 1 January 2007 The Associated Press reported: The New Year was welcomed around the world with calls for peace and harmony among nations. 'At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI prayed for peace in the Middle East, asking that people work ''courageously'' toward an end to the Holy Land's conflict,' the Associated Press reported.

The article reported that in Asia, 'South Korea's prime minister vowed to work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.'

In Europe, 'Danish Queen Margrethe urged Danes to be more understanding of foreign cultures' the article stated.

Bulgaria welcomed 2007 with a flag raising ceremony in Sofia, celebrating the country's new membership in the European Union.

The Associated Press quoted Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev as saying `A dream came true today—a dream for generations of Bulgarians who wished to live together with the free and democratic peoples of Europe in peace and prosperity.'

Prime Minister Stanishev 'joined tens of thousands of Bulgarians at a fireworks show to celebrate the country's accession', the article stated.

The Associated Press reported that 'From the slopes of Mount Fuji to the banks of the River Thames, 2007 began with a common theme: Hope for prosperity, health and peace.'
