Peace and love, man - Donovan meditates on higher education

By Tim Cornwell

Forget the faded towers of learning in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or St Andrews. Scotland has a bold new university to promote yogic flying and national "invincibility".

Invincible Donovan University has been named after Scotland's "great cultural hero"…

Students in the college will study education, health, economics and music and arts, along with "total knowledge" and the "unified field". It will promote national "invincibility" and world peace.

"It will be a regular university, but powered by this extraordinary technique," Donovan declared yesterday, launching the project. "Invincible youth, building a future of peace, surely that's only in a Donovan or John Lennon song? But no, it's a reality"…

Folk singer’s university for world peace

By Julia Horton

Welcome to the Invincible Donovan University, offering "total knowledge" to every student.
Through meditation a thousand young Scots will, according to the legendary Scottish folk singer, reach a state of full enlightenment so powerful it will ultimately enable them to create world peace.

Donovan himself admits that it sounds like the kind of idealism he might have written about in one of his songs.

But yesterday the Glasgow-born star announced plans to make his dream a reality in Scotland "as soon as possible".

He will be supported by American film-maker David Lynch, creator of notoriously bizarre cult classics including Twin Peaks.

Both iconic figures are committed to launching the university and have already singled out three sites, including one in the south-west of Glasgow. However, the most likely site is in Edinburgh's Waterfront development…

Donovan aims to put students on higher plane

- Meditation to underpin university's curriculum
- David Lynch backs singer's proposal for institution
By Thair Shaikh
…The Invincible Donovan University will provide the traditional university subjects, but students will also undergo training in transcendental meditation - the technique practised by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and popularised by the Beatles. Donovan, whose hits include Hurdy Gurdy Man and Mellow Yellow, said he would open the university in either Glasgow or Edinburgh, bringing the hippy dream of world peace to his home country of Scotland…

Star Donovan to open new university for 'invincibility'

A veteran Scots singer-songwriter has announced plans to establish a new "university" in Edinburgh.

Donovan, who penned hits such as Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow, said he planned to set up the new school of learning at the Waterfront or in Glasgow.

The singer said the initiative, which will be known as the "Invincible Donovan University", will offer students enlightenment and "create invincibility in national consciousness".

The scheme was also backed by cult filmmaker David Lynch and world-renowned quantum physicist John Hagelin, who were set to hold a press conference at the Balmoral Hotel today…

Donovan wants to open a university

Donovan outlines university plans

Legendary Scottish singer Donovan has announced plans to open a university in Scotland that would use meditation as part of its curriculum.
The Invincible Donovan University will provide traditional education programmes but students will also undergo training in the practice of transcendental meditation which practitioners believe reduces stress and boosts creativity and learning.
Donovan was joined today (Friday) by filmmaker David Lynch, whose own meditation foundation has brought programmes to schools across the US and Europe…

Bring peace to schools by meditation, say Lynch and Donovan

By Amol Rajan

One is among Hollywood's most celebrated directors, with a reputation for making dark films and a fondness for creating "peace palaces" in his spare time. The other is an ageing Scottish folk singer who once collaborated with The Beatles. Together, they want to change education across the world forever.

The unlikely coalition of David Lynch and Donovan Leitch is set to launch itself upon British schools with a tour to promulgate "Consciousness-based education and world peace". Their aim: to bring transcendental meditation (TM) to millions of pupils...

The Big Question: What is transcendental meditation, and is it the cure for society's ills?

By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor

Why are we asking this now?

Film director David Lynch and Sixties pop star Donovan have teamed up to launch a campaign to encourage children to meditate in school. In a series of talks , the pair will promote the technique of transcendental meditation practised by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and popularised by the Beatles 40 years ago. Another TM convert to have just emerged is Joaquim Chissano, the former president of Mozambique, who has been honoured with the Achievement in African Leadership award.

Has David Lynch done this before?

Yes. Lynch is reported to have persuaded 20,000 US pupils to take twice daily transcendental meditation lessons with their teachers. He has also donated millions to the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education. He said: "The technique of transcendental meditation has seen a drop in stabbings, violence, depressions, suicides and the use of illegal drugs in some of the worst schools in the US you can imagine." Lynch has also spoken of the benefits he has gained from TM: "When I started meditating I had a real anger in me, and I would take this out on my first wife. Two weeks after I started meditating, this anger lifted."

What does Donovan say about TM?

He claims it is the secret of his success as a musician. Last year the Scots-born troubadour, famous for hits such as "Mellow Yellow" and "Jennifer Juniper", said he was planning a world tour to reawaken people to the mind-expanding wonders of meditation. "I had all the western trouble of the psyche: anxiety, anger, stress and fear which all cause illness. Over the past 40 years I have experienced the way this system has absolute healing benefits"...

David Lynch taking meditation to UK schools

By Laura Clout

Cult film director David Lynch has launched a campaign to promote meditation in British schools.

Lynch, who made Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive plus the TV series Twin Peaks, advocates transcendental meditation (TM) as an antidote to violence, suicide and illegal drug-taking.

He has been practising TM for more than 30 years and has persuaded 20,000 pupils in the US to do two 20-minute sessions every day.

The US director believes meditation can bring peace to the world. His David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education provides scholarships to children who want to learn the technique...

Meditation could bring peace, says director David Lynch
By Nathan Burstein
Peace would come to the Middle East if more people in the region meditated, four-time Oscar nominee David Lynch said Tuesday, speaking at Jerusalem's Sam Spiegel Film and Television School.

The comments, which followed a meeting with President Shimon Peres, may be of questionable strategic value in the lead-up to next month's peace summit, but were generally in keeping with the reputation of the offbeat filmmaker, one of the most distinctive - and strangest - to crack the Hollywood elite.

The director of stylish, enigmatic films including Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, Lynch arrived in Israel on Sunday for a five-day visit, during which he'll meet with thousands of film students and movie enthusiasts at the Sam Spiegel School and at the Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv Cinematheques.

A two-time award winner at the Cannes Film Festival, the 61-year-old director has also scheduled meetings with Culture, Science and Sport Minister Ghaleb Majadle, and with Education Minister Yuli Tamir.

He'll receive an honorary fellowship during his visit from the Sam Spiegel School, an award that follows his induction earlier this month into France's Legion of Honor.

Lynch will spend his Israel visit promoting his Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, an organization that advocates change through meditation and enlightenment…

Filmmaker encourages transcendental meditation as a way to peace

Jerusalem (AP) - Iconic filmmaker David Lynch says Israeli President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres has a very beautiful soul.

Lynch, on a five-day visit to Israel to encourage transcendental meditation as a new approach to eliminating violence in schools and creating a peaceful world, met with Peres Monday morning.

Real peace is not just the absence of war, but the absence of all suffering, all negativity,» Lynch said, speaking at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem Monday. «Change comes from within. From the first meditation, boom, you're there.

Lynch, best known for such surrealistic films as The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, as well as the television series Twin Peaks, has been meditating for more than 30 years. He started the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace to promote transcendental meditation as a way to aid students in violence-ridden schools and bring about world harmony…

By Regan E. Doherty

Jerusalem (AP) — David Lynch, on a five-day visit to Israel to encourage transcendental meditation, met with Israeli President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres.
"Lynch is one of the greatest directors of our generation and a giant artist on his own, and it is a great honor for the state of Israel to host you and listen to you," Peres said Monday. "The whole of Israel recognizes your work and is proud to host you."
The 61-year-old director, who has received Oscar nominations for "The Elephant Man," "Blue Velvet" and "Mullholland Dr.," is visiting Israel to encourage transcendental meditation as a new approach to eliminating violence in schools and creating a peaceful world.
"Real peace is not just the absence of war, but the absence of all suffering, all negativity," Lynch said at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem. "Change comes from within. From the first meditation, boom, you're there."

Hollywood great gets into spirit in Capital

Brian Ferguson

One is arguably Hollywood's most maverick film-maker - the mastermind behind movies like Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Mulholland Drive.

The other is a veteran Scots singer-songwriter best known for his close friendship with the Beatles at the height of their fame.

But when David Lynch and Donovan appear on an Edinburgh stage later this month the focus is not expected to be on their long-running careers and famed talents.

For the pair have joined forces to highlight the benefits of Transcendental Meditation and how it has influenced their lives and work.

They will be visiting as part of a tour of the UK and Ireland to promote the spiritual practice and the work of a foundation set up by the film-maker to help introduce it into schools in the United States.

The Queen's Hall, on South Clerk Street, is expected to be full to its 900-strong capacity for the event on October 26…
