A PRIMARY school is giving new meaning to the expression "higher learning".

Maharishi School students are studying transcendental meditation twice a day as part of their curriculum.
And teachers say the pupils are more focused, make smarter decisions and express a greater sense of themselves than before they began the unusual subject.

Teachers and parents at the Reservoir school believe the ages-old meditation technique could help cut soaring student stress levels they claim are turning Melbourne's schoolyards into bullying battlegrounds.

The school has enlisted the help of a US meditation expert to try to convince other schools to try the same approach.

Quantum physicist Ashley Deans, principal of the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Iowa, will present a series of lectures in Melbourne this week to promote the positives of the power of the mind.

In the meantime, Maharishi Primary principal Frances Clarke said proof of the benefits was found in her 50 pupils.

"There has been a noticeable change in their growth and enthusiasm for schoolwork," she said.

"It is particularly evident among students who have had experiences at other schools that have not been positive."

Students spend as many minutes meditating as they are years old.

Children over 10 are seated on "back jacks" or soft, mat-like chairs on the floor against the wall of their classroom, their eyes closed and their thoughts focused.

Younger children meditate while walking.

Far from being a religion or philosophy, Ms Clarke said scientific studies had shown transcendental meditation promoted the full potential of the brain and provided the body with deep, rejuvenating rest.

"Research has found that the frontal cortex of the brain is enlivened and becomes more coherent," Ms Clarke said.

"This is the part of the brain that governs planning, decision-making, moral reasoning, judgment and higher-level emotional control."

Dr Deans will lecture at La Trobe University at 7.30pm tonight, and tomorrow at noon.
